Due to its regulations, Canada provides all international students an opportunity to work for 20 hours a week during the semester and full time during summer and winter breaks.

This will allow them to manage their finances and reduce the risks of incurring enormous debts.

To access this opportunity, students must meet the following requirements;

  • Have a valid study permit
  • Be a full-time student
  • Enrolled in a designated learning institution at the University. In Quebec, you must be enrolled in a vocational program at the secondary level
  • Studying in a vocational, professional, or academic training program leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate that is a minimum of six months in duration.

If you qualify, your permit will allow you to work for up to 20 hours a week and full-time during breaks.

Most international students take the path of seeking permanent residence once they’ve completed their program. One way to go about this is through the work program offered by the Canadian government.
A work permit may be issued on the completion of the study program for the duration of the concluded program. This means that if you just finished a four year program, you will be granted a three-year work permit and if you finished a twelve-month program, you will be issued a twelve-month work permit.

Work experience gained through the post-graduate work permit program is used to rack up points towards getting permanent residency in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Certain provinces such as Quebec and British Columbia, have immigration streams that qualify for permanent residence.

Candidates qualified for British Columbia’s International Post-Graduate category have the advantage of not requiring a job offer and being able to have their application for permanent residence processed through the federal Express Entry immigration selection system.
