Alberta will expand its provincial immigration program to accept applications from clerics who meet the pastoral and spiritual requirements of their communities, joining other provinces in doing so.
In order to fulfill their liturgical, pastoral, and spiritual needs, hundreds of faith groups from a wide spectrum of religious traditions call Alberta home. Many of these communities rely on clergy and other religious workers from other countries. However, at the moment there is no clear method for such workers to apply for or receive permanent residency in Alberta, thus many reputable religious workers who form strong bonds with their communities are forced to leave the country when their temporary status has expired.
The government of Alberta is taking action to draw these employees under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program to ensure that religious groups can better serve their communities.

If they match the requirements, religious employees may apply to the program through the Rural Renewal Stream, Alberta Opportunity Stream, or Alberta Express Entry Stream.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream is for temporary foreign employees who have a full-time employment offer from an Alberta business in an appropriate occupation and are already employed in Alberta.
A job offer from a community to work in one of Alberta’s designated rural towns qualifies a person for the Rural Renewal Stream.
The Alberta Express Entry Stream enables Alberta to propose eligible applicants from the federal Express Entry pool who have strong links to the province or who have a job that contributes to its diversity and economic growth.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream is for temporary foreign employees who have a full-time employment offer from an Alberta company in an appropriate occupation and are already employed full-time in Alberta. Candidates must either possess a work permit that qualifies for an acceptable LMIA exemption or have a favorable Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Additionally, candidates must satisfy minimal requirements for occupation, education, language proficiency, type of residence and work permit, employment offer from Alberta, and work experience.
